Drum Up Happiness: The Workshop That’s Changing Team-Building
Picture this: stressed professionals drumming out a rhythm together, followed by loud laughter from making a laughter smoothie that almost raises the roof. Sounds too unique? Maybe. But this is revolutionising workplace wellbeing.
Meet “Drum Up Happiness” – the workshop that’s turning traditional team building on its head by combining the raw power of group drumming with the healing magic of Wellbeing Laughter. And honestly? The results speak for themselves.
It’s also your perfect addition for the International Week of Happiness at Work (6th-10th October).
How This All Started
I’m Sunny Turner from Serious Laughter, and I know what it’s like to struggle. I found my way into Laughter Yoga through my own battle with depression, which means I genuinely get why people roll their eyes at “wellness workshops.” I’ve been there. I understand the scepticism. And I’ve seen first-hand how powerful these techniques can be when you’re brave enough to give them a go.
That’s where my partnership with Elk Burland from Synergy Beat comes in. His expertise in group drumming creates something extraordinary when combined with my approach to therapeutic laughter. Together, we’ve discovered that when you put rhythm and laughter in the same room, magic happens.
Why Drumming and Laughter Work
Here’s the thing about drumming together – it literally gets your hearts beating in sync. That’s not just poetic nonsense; it’s actual biology. When people drum as a group, their heartbeats naturally synchronise, creating a physical connection that breaks through all the usual workplace barriers.
Add therapeutic laughter to the mix, and you’ve got something special – proper, endorphin-releasing, stress-busting laughter that comes from shared experience and genuine connection.
The best part? You don’t need to be the next Ringo Starr or a stand-up comedian. My sessions are designed for real people with real inhibitions and real workplace stress. Everyone gets involved, everyone feels safe, and everyone leaves feeling different.
What Happens
The changes people experience after my workshops aren’t just feel-good fluff. They’re real, measurable improvements that make a genuine difference to working life:
Your Brain Gets Sharper
That mental fog that settles in around 3pm? It lifts. People find they can focus better, think more clearly, and tackle those challenging projects with renewed energy. It’s like giving your brain a proper service.
Creative Solutions Start Flowing
When you’re relaxed and energised with extra oxygen, your mind starts making connections it couldn’t see before. Teams often leave with fresh approaches to problems that have been niggling them for months.
Sleep Soundly
The stress release from drumming and laughing helps people switch off properly at night. Better sleep means showing up to work ready for the day ahead, rather than just surviving it.
Stress Becomes Manageable
Here’s where it gets fascinating. Regular workplace stress doesn’t disappear, but people develop better ways of handling it. They’re calmer, more patient, and less likely to snap when things get hectic.
Teams Start Liking Each Other
This isn’t about forced fun or artificial team bonding. When people create music and share genuine laughter, they see each other as humans rather than just job titles. That colleague who always seems grumpy? Turns out they’re quite lovely when they’re not stressed to the eyeballs.
Energy Levels Stay Up
Instead of the usual 4pm crash, people find they have sustained energy throughout the day. The immune boost from all that laughter means fewer sick days, too.
Exercise That Doesn’t Feel Like Punishment
For teams working long hours and tight deadlines, this becomes a form of exercise that’s enjoyable and accessible. No lycra required!
Creating Space for Real People
What makes my sessions work is understanding that most people aren’t naturally comfortable expressing themselves at work. We’ve all learned to be “professional,” which often means hiding who we really are.
“Drum Up Happiness” creates a bubble where it’s safe to be human. The activities are structured enough that even the most reserved person can join in, but flexible enough for natural leaders to shine in unexpected ways. It’s about meeting people where they are, not where I think they should be.
The Long-Term Impact
The fascinating bit happens after my workshop ends. Teams that have drummed and laughed together carry something different back to their daily work. They communicate more effectively, collaborate more naturally, and manage stress as a team rather than as individual team members.
Managers notice that these teams seem more resilient when facing challenges. There’s less workplace drama, more creative problem-solving, and a general atmosphere that makes work feel less like work. Think about the benefits long-term!
Who This Works For
Our approach works brilliantly for:
- Companies planning retreats that want real team transformation, not just a day out with good food and drinks
- Organisations serious about staff wellbeing beyond just mental health awareness tick-boxing
- Teams dealing with high stress or burnout who need practical tools, not just advice
- Any workplace where people have forgotten how to connect as humans
Unlocking Magic
For teams that are fundamentally decent people working together, it can unlock something powerful. It reminds everyone why human connection matters and provides them with tools to maintain that connection when work becomes demanding.
These workshops require everyone to be together in the same space – there’s something about the shared physical experience of drumming and laughing that can’t be replicated online. The energy, the vibrations, the collective rhythm – it all requires being physically present together.
Perfect Timing for Change
International Week of Happiness at Work (6th-10th October) is the perfect opportunity to introduce something genuinely transformative to your workplace. Whilst many organisations will be looking for ways to tick the box during this week, “Drum Up Happiness” offers something much more meaningful. This experience creates lasting positive change rather than just a fleeting feel-good moment.
This workshop embodies everything that International Week of Happiness at Work stands for: genuine wellbeing, authentic connection, and creating workplaces where people want to be. It’s not about superficial happiness or forced positivity – it’s about building the foundations for sustained workplace joy through genuine human connection.
Ready for Something Different?
If you’re tired of team-building exercises that make everyone cringe or wellness initiatives that feel like another item on your to-do list, maybe it’s time to try something that works effectively.
Elk and I deliver “Drum Up Happiness” across Manchester, Cheshire, North Wales, and throughout the UK. We understand that every team is different, every workplace has its own dynamics, and every group needs something slightly different to help them connect.
The outcome? Teams that genuinely enjoy working together handle stress better and perform at their best because they’re energised rather than exhausted.
