8 Myths About Laughter Yoga (That Might Be Holding You Back)

Have you ever heard about Laughter Yoga and thought, “That’s not for me”? You’re not alone. There are so many misconceptions floating around about what Laughter Yoga actually is  – and what it isn’t.

I get it. When I first encountered Laughter Yoga during my own journey through depression, I was sceptical too. But giving it a go changed everything for me, and that’s why I’m so passionate about breaking down these myths. Because if they’re keeping you from trying something that could genuinely help, that’s a real shame.

So, let’s tackle the biggest myths head-on, shall we?

Myth 1: “You need to feel happy to laugh”

This is probably the most common misconception I hear, and I understand why people hold this view. After all, laughter and happiness seem to go hand in hand, don’t they?

Here’s the reality: Laughter Yoga uses simulated laughter exercises that work regardless of how you’re feeling when you arrive. Your body doesn’t know the difference between real and simulated laughter. The physical act of laughing triggers the same beneficial responses in your body – releasing endorphins, reducing stress hormones, and boosting your mood.

You don’t need to be happy to laugh. In fact, that’s the whole point. You can arrive feeling low, stressed, or utterly exhausted, and still experience the positive changes that laughter brings. The joy often comes after you start, not before.

Myth 2: “It’s just silly games”

I’ll be honest – yes, Laughter Yoga can look silly from the outside. But dismissing it as “just games” misses the science behind what we’re doing.

This is a science-backed wellbeing practice. Research consistently shows that laughter reduces stress hormones like cortisol, boosts your immune system, and releases endorphins – your body’s natural feel-good chemicals. We’re doing serious wellness work here, even if it doesn’t look traditionally “serious.”

The playfulness is intentional. It helps break down barriers and gets people out of their heads. But make no mistake – the benefits are real and measurable.

Myth 3: “You need a sense of humour”

Here’s where Laughter Yoga is truly different from a comedy show or a night out with funny friends. Your sense of humour is completely irrelevant.

We practice laughter exercises without jokes, comedy, or humour. There’s no pressure to find things funny or to be funny yourself. The physiological benefits come from the act of laughing heartily, not from being amused by anything in particular.

Whether you’re naturally quick-witted or you’ve never told a joke in your life, you can do Laughter Yoga. It’s about the practice, not the punchlines.

Myth 4: “It won’t work if you’re depressed”

This one is particularly close to my heart because I came to Laughter Yoga during my own depression journey. I have great empathy for anyone who feels sceptical about wellbeing practices, especially when you’re struggling with your mental health.

The reality is that Laughter Yoga can be particularly powerful when you’re experiencing low mood, anxiety, or depression. You don’t need to “think positive” or force yourself to feel happy. It works directly with your body’s natural stress-relief systems.

I’m not saying it’s a cure or a replacement for professional support. But it’s an accessible tool that meets you exactly where you are. You don’t need to be in a good place to start – that’s rather the point.

Myth 5: “Laughter Yoga is only for extroverts”

When people imagine a Laughter Yoga session, they often picture a room full of loud, outgoing personalities. It can seem like an extrovert’s paradise, which understandably puts introverts off.

But here’s what happens: our sessions create a safe, inclusive environment where introverts and extroverts alike can participate at their own comfort level. The structured exercises help people who find social situations challenging connect with others in a low-pressure environment.

Introverts often tell me they feel genuinely welcomed and supported in sessions. There’s no pressure to perform or be the loudest person in the room. Everyone belongs here, regardless of personality type.

Myth 6: “The benefits are temporary”

“Sure, you might feel good for an hour afterwards, but then what?” This is what people often think about Laughter Yoga – that it’s just a temporary mood boost.

Regular practice creates lasting change. Consistent Laughter Yoga rewires how your body and mind handle stress and challenges. We’re talking about reduced stress hormones, improved immune function, better mood regulation, and enhanced resilience over time.

Yes, you’ll likely feel brilliant immediately after a session. But the real magic happens when you practice regularly. The benefits compound and become part of how your body responds to life’s ups and downs.

Myth 7: “It’s too unprofessional for the workplace”

Some organisations worry that Laughter Yoga is too silly or informal for a professional setting. But forward-thinking businesses recognise it as a legitimate wellbeing tool.

Laughter Yoga is used successfully in corporate environments, healthcare settings, and mental health services across the UK. It’s an effective way to manage stress, build team connection, and support employee wellbeing – all things that professional organisations genuinely care about.

Professional doesn’t mean serious all the time. Smart businesses understand that investing in their people’s well-being, including practices such as Laughter Yoga, leads to higher productivity, improved morale, and reduced stress.

The invitation

So, there you have it – eight myths well and truly busted.

If any of these misconceptions have been holding you back from trying Laughter Yoga, I hope this has given you a different perspective. You don’t need to be happy, funny, extroverted, flexible, or in perfect mental health to give it a go. You just need to be willing to try something a bit different.

And here’s what I’ve learned from years of running sessions: the biggest sceptics often become the biggest advocates once they’ve experienced it for themselves. There’s something about being in the room, doing the exercises, and feeling the shift in your body and mood that simply can’t be captured in words.
