Does Laughter Yoga Really Work? 8 Myths Busted
Does Laughter Yoga really work, or is it just people forcing a giggle in a circle? You’re not alone in wondering. There are so many misconceptions floating around about what Laughter Yoga actually is, and what it isn’t. This article busts 8 of the most common myths, including that you need to feel happy, have a sense of humour, or be flexible to take part. You’ll learn what Laughter Yoga actually is, how simulated laughter delivers real benefits like reduced stress and better mood, and why it works just as well for sceptics, introverts, and the workplace as it does for anyone else.
Have you ever heard about Laughter Yoga and thought, “That’s not for me”? Or wondered whether it really works, or whether it’s just people forcing a giggle in a circle? You’re not alone. There are so many misconceptions floating around about what Laughter Yoga actually is, and what it isn’t.
I get it. When I first encountered Laughter Yoga during my own journey through depression, I was sceptical too. But giving it a go changed everything for me, and that’s why I’m so passionate about breaking down these myths. Because if they’re keeping you from trying something that could genuinely help, that’s a real shame.
So let’s tackle the biggest myths head-on, shall we?
What is Laughter Yoga, in a nutshell?
Before we bust the myths, here’s the quick version. Laughter Yoga (sometimes spelt laughing yoga) combines simulated laughter exercises with gentle yogic breathing. It was developed in the 1990s on the simple principle that your body responds to laughter, whether spontaneous or intentional. You don’t need jokes, you don’t need to be flexible, and you don’t need to feel happy to begin. Now, on to the myths.

Myth 1: “You need to feel happy to laugh”
This is probably the most common misconception I hear, and I understand why people think this. After all, laughter and happiness seem to go hand in hand, don’t they?
Here’s the reality: Laughter Yoga uses simulated laughter exercises that work regardless of how you’re feeling when you arrive. Your body doesn’t actually know the difference between real and simulated laughter. The physical act of laughing triggers the same beneficial responses in your body, releasing endorphins, reducing stress hormones, and boosting your mood.
You don’t need to be happy to laugh. In fact, that’s the whole point. You can arrive feeling low, stressed, or utterly exhausted, and still experience the positive changes that laughter brings. The joy often comes after you start, not before.
Myth 2: “It’s just silly games”
I’ll be honest, yes, Laughter Yoga can look silly from the outside. But dismissing it as “just games” misses the science behind what we’re doing.
This is a science-backed wellbeing practice. Research consistently shows that laughter reduces stress hormones like cortisol, boosts your immune system, and releases endorphins, your body’s natural feel-good chemicals. We’re doing serious wellness work here, even if it doesn’t look traditionally “serious.”
The playfulness is intentional. It helps break down barriers and gets people out of their heads. But make no mistake, the benefits are real and measurable.

Myth 3: “You need a sense of humour”
Here’s where Laughter Yoga is truly different from a comedy show or a night out with funny friends. Your sense of humour is completely irrelevant.
We practice laughter exercises without jokes, comedy, or humour. There’s no pressure to find things funny or to be funny yourself. The physiological benefits come from the act of laughing heartily, not from being amused by anything in particular.
Whether you’re naturally quick-witted or you’ve never told a joke in your life, you can do Laughter Yoga. It’s about the practice, not the punchlines.
Myth 4: “I’m not flexible enough for yoga”
This one stops people before they even try. The word “yoga” can be intimidating if you’re imagining complicated poses and bendy bodies in lycra.
Here’s the relief: Laughter Yoga isn’t traditional yoga. There are no complicated poses, no mats, no lycra required. We’re not doing downward dogs or warrior poses.
Laughter yoga combines laughter exercises with yogic breathing (pranayama). That’s where the “yoga” part comes in. You’ll be standing, moving gently, and breathing, but you won’t be bending yourself into pretzel shapes or worrying about your flexibility.
You can do it in your work clothes, in a chair if needed, and regardless of your fitness level. It’s accessible to absolutely everyone.
Myth 5: “It won’t work if you’re depressed”
This one is particularly close to my heart because I came to Laughter Yoga during my own depression journey. I have great empathy for anyone who feels sceptical about wellbeing practices, especially when you’re struggling with your mental health.
The reality is that Laughter Yoga can be particularly powerful when you’re experiencing low mood, anxiety, or depression. You don’t need to “think positive” or force yourself to feel happy. It works directly with your body’s natural stress-relief systems.
I’m not saying it’s a cure or a replacement for professional support. But it’s an accessible tool that meets you exactly where you are. You don’t need to be in a good place to start; that’s the reason it works so well.

Myth 6: “Laughter Yoga is only for extroverts”
When people imagine a Laughter Yoga session, they often picture a room full of loud, outgoing personalities. It can seem like an extrovert’s paradise, which understandably puts introverts off.
But here’s what actually happens: our sessions create a safe, inclusive environment where introverts and extroverts alike can participate at their own comfort level. The structured exercises actually help people who find social situations challenging to connect with others in a low-pressure way.
Introverts often tell me they feel genuinely welcomed and supported in sessions. There’s no pressure to perform or be the loudest person in the room. Everyone belongs here, regardless of personality type.

Myth 7: “The benefits are temporary”
“Sure, you might feel good for an hour afterwards, but then what?” This is what people often think about Laughter Yoga: that it’s just a temporary mood boost.
The truth is that regular practice creates lasting changes. Consistent Laughter Yoga rewires how your body and mind handle stress and challenges. We’re talking about reduced stress hormones, improved immune function, better mood regulation, and enhanced resilience over time.
Yes, you’ll likely feel brilliant immediately after a session. But the real magic happens when you practice regularly. The benefits compound and become part of how your body responds to life’s ups and downs.
The good news is that all our clients remember how they feel during and after a session, so that memory stays with them.

Myth 8: “It’s too unprofessional for the workplace”
Some organisations worry that Laughter Yoga is too silly or informal for a professional setting. But forward-thinking businesses recognise it as a legitimate wellbeing tool.
Laughter Yoga is used successfully in corporate environments, healthcare settings, and mental health services across the UK. It’s an effective way to manage stress, build team connections, and support employee well-being, all of which professional organisations genuinely care about.
Professional doesn’t mean serious all the time. Smart businesses understand that investing in their people’s wellbeing, including through practices like Laughter Yoga, leads to better productivity, improved morale, and reduced stress.
Frequently asked questions

Yes. The practice is based on the finding that your body responds to intentional laughter much as it does to spontaneous laughter, releasing endorphins and lowering stress hormones. Regular practice is linked to reduced stress, better mood, and improved resilience.

No. No poses, mats, or flexibility are required. Laughter Yoga combines laughter exercises with simple breathing techniques, so anyone can take part, seated if needed.

Neither. There are no jokes involved, and you don’t need to arrive in a good mood. The exercises work regardless of how you’re feeling when you start.

Many people find it helpful for managing stress and lifting their mood. It isn’t a replacement for professional care, but it’s an accessible tool that meets you where you are.
