How To Prevent Employee Burnout: The Power of Non-Sleep Deep Rest (Yoga Nidra)
“I’m exhausted” – it’s a phrase heard in offices, on video calls, and in team meetings across the UK every single day. But there is a difference between feeling tired at the end of a busy week and the deep, persistent depletion of employee burnout. And that difference matters enormously – for individuals, for teams, and for businesses.
Burnout is rising sharply across the UK workforce. According to research by CIPD and Simplyhealth, 76% of organisations reported stress-related absence in 2023, whilst one in five employees is currently experiencing the effects of burnout. Mental Health UK has identified the key contributing factors as heavy workloads (54%), unpaid overtime (45%), and feelings of isolation at work (42%). Long-term sick leave cases are now at a record high.
For those with neurodiverse conditions such as ADHD, burnout can be even more frequent – stress and hyperfocus make it especially difficult to rest and recover between demands.
The good news is that there are practical, accessible tools that can help. One of the most powerful – and least talked about – is Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR), also known as Yoga Nidra.
What Is Non-Sleep Deep Rest (Yoga Nidra)?
Non-Sleep Deep Rest, or NSDR, is a guided relaxation practice that brings the body and mind into a state of deep rest without requiring full sleep. It is also widely known by its traditional name, Yoga Nidra, which translates from Sanskrit as “yogic sleep.”
Despite the name, it is not a spiritual practice, and you certainly do not need to be an experienced yogi to benefit. There are no poses, no stretches, and no prior experience required. Typically, a session lasts 20-30 minutes and is performed lying down in a quiet, comfortable space.
During the practice, a combination of breathing exercises, body scans, and calming visualisations guides the nervous system into a state of deep relaxation. The brain enters the delta brainwave state – the same deeply restorative state experienced during the deepest stage of sleep. Research suggests that 20 minutes of Yoga Nidra can provide the equivalent of approximately two hours of restful sleep, making it a remarkably efficient tool for recovery.
Unlike meditation, which asks you to focus the mind, Yoga Nidra works by systematically releasing tension from the body whilst the mind remains gently aware. It is, in essence, hydration for your nervous system.
Why Employee Burnout Happens – And Why Rest Isn’t Enough
Many employees try to recover from burnout simply by sleeping more or taking time off, only to find they return to work feeling just as depleted. This is because burnout is not simply about tiredness – it is about a chronic dysregulation of the nervous system.
When we are under prolonged stress, the body remains stuck in a state of fight-or-flight, driven by the sympathetic nervous system. Sleep alone is often not enough to shift this, particularly when stress and anxiety interfere with sleep quality in the first place.
What the body actually needs is direct access to the parasympathetic nervous system – the rest and digest state – which is precisely what Yoga Nidra activates. By intentionally guiding the nervous system into deep rest, NSDR allows the body to begin its natural process of self-repair and restoration.
How Yoga Nidra Fits Into Your Corporate Wellbeing Programme
At Serious Laughter, Yoga Nidra is included in every 60-minute corporate Laughter Yoga workshop, both in person and online. After the laughter and movement of a Laughter Yoga session, 15 to 20 minutes of Yoga Nidra provides the perfect counterbalance – grounding participants, restoring their energy, and leaving them feeling revitalised rather than simply stimulated.
It requires no equipment, no special clothing, and no previous experience. Participants simply find a comfortable position – seated or lying down – and are guided through the practice. Many organisations are now incorporating short NSDR sessions into their working day as a proactive approach to stress management and burnout prevention.
8 Benefits of Yoga Nidra for Employees
Improved Sleep Quality
Yoga Nidra trains the nervous system to access deep rest, reducing the likelihood of insomnia and other sleep disturbances. By regularly entering the delta brainwave state, employees wake feeling genuinely restored rather than groggy and unrested.
Stress Reduction
By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, Yoga Nidra counteracts the effects of chronic stress. The practice creates a deep sense of calm throughout the body and mind, allowing employees to genuinely switch off from work pressures – even for just 20 minutes.
Recovery From Sleep Deficit
For employees running on little sleep, Yoga Nidra offers an efficient way to catch up on rest during the working day. Even a single session can meaningfully restore energy levels and improve focus.
Personal Growth and Emotional Reset
The practice encourages self-awareness and emotional clarity, helping individuals gain perspective on challenges that may feel overwhelming. Many people use Yoga Nidra to set intentions and positive affirmations, building mental resilience over time.
Creativity and Problem-Solving
Deep rest restores cognitive function. After a Yoga Nidra session, many people report improved concentration, greater mental clarity, and a renewed ability to approach problems creatively – all of which directly benefit workplace performance.
Greater Resilience When Facing Challenges
Regular practice cultivates a sense of inner calm that carries into daily life. Employees who practise Yoga Nidra consistently often find they respond to pressure and setbacks with greater equanimity rather than reactivity.
Pain Management and Physical Wellbeing
For employees managing chronic conditions aggravated by stress – such as IBS, migraines, or tension headaches – the deep relaxation of Yoga Nidra can help reduce symptoms by lowering cortisol and releasing physical tension held in the body.
The Body’s Natural Self-Repair
The deepest stages of rest are when the body carries out its most important repair and restoration work. By regularly accessing the delta brainwave state through Yoga Nidra, employees support their immune system, cellular repair, and long-term physical health.
A Personal Note From Sunny Turner
I came to Yoga Nidra through my own experience of burnout and depression, and it has been a genuinely transformative practice for me. When my energy levels drop, a 20-minute Yoga Nidra session reliably restores me in a way that simply lying down and resting does not.
I recommend it to clients who are close to burnout, struggling with sleep, managing high stress, or simply running on empty. Watching corporate participants emerge from a Yoga Nidra session – visibly calmer, brighter, and more energised – is one of the most rewarding parts of the work I do.
The combination of Laughter Yoga and Yoga Nidra is genuinely powerful. Laughter fills the body with energy and connection; Yoga Nidra grounds and restores. Together, they offer something that most conventional wellbeing sessions simply do not: a complete reset for both body and mind.
