Why Every School Needs Laughter Yoga
Evidence-Based Benefits for Children

New research reveals how Laughter Yoga reduces stress, boosts happiness, and improves learning in children. Discover the science-backed benefits for schools across the UK.

As I stood in a bustling school hall this week, watching children’s faces light up during a Laughter Yoga session, I was reminded of something powerful: laughter isn’t just fun – it’s transformative. And now, groundbreaking research proves it.

The Evidence Is In: Research-Backed Benefits of Laughter Yoga

A comprehensive systematic review recently published in BMC Pediatrics (January 2026), titled “Healing with laughter: the therapeutic power of laughter yoga in pediatric health,” analysed six studies involving over 300 children across multiple countries including South Korea, Turkey, Hong Kong, and India. The findings are remarkable.

The research demonstrated that Laughter Yoga:

  • Significantly reduced stress and anxiety levels in children
  • Increased happiness and improved self-concept
  • Reduced pain and fatigue levels
  • Boosted immune function through increased salivary IgA levels
  • Enhanced children’s ability to cope with daily challenges

The researchers concluded that Laughter Yoga should be used more widely in children’s daily lives and clinical practices, describing it as “a promising, accessible, non-pharmacological approach for paediatric care.”

Beyond the Research: Real-World Benefits for Schools

Whilst the scientific evidence is compelling, the practical benefits I witness in schools across Manchester, Cheshire, and North Wales every day are equally powerful. Children who participate in Laughter Yoga programmes may experience:

Academic & Cognitive Benefits

  • Increased attention span for learning – crucial in our distraction-filled world
  • Works the creative brain for problem-solving – essential for flexible thinking
  • Better concentration and energy – helping children stay engaged throughout the school day
  • Enhanced flexible thinking – the ability to adapt, see different perspectives, and approach challenges from multiple angles
  • Increased learning ability through cognitive development, motor skills
  • Brain development – creates neural connections to support brain development
  • Releases stress and anxiety from academic pressure

Physical Health Benefits

  • Better motor skills through physical exercise – without the pressure of competitive sport
  • Immune booster – meaning less time off school
  • Helps to keep a healthy heart as the circulatory system is stimulated
  • Helps lower blood sugar levels
  • Increases the breathing capacity of the lungs and flushes the lungs of stale air
  • Correct breathing techniques that help children remain calmer

Emotional & Social Wellbeing

  • Better balanced mood and emotions – creating a more harmonious classroom environment
  • Lower stress levels and reduced irritability – particularly important during exam periods
  • Better communication skills and emotional intelligence
  • Learning to connect and interact socially in a safe, supportive environment
  • Learning acceptance and respect for themselves and others
  • Breaking ego barriers that can hinder collaboration and learning
  • Decreases physical, mental and emotional stress instantly

The Modern Childhood Challenge

Perhaps most importantly in today’s digital age: technology is depriving children of play. Laughter Yoga offers children a screen-free activity that engages their whole being – body, mind and spirit.

Why Laughter Yoga Works

Unlike traditional exercise or wellbeing programmes, Laughter Yoga doesn’t require children to be funny, tell jokes, or even feel particularly happy. The practice combines simulated laughter exercises with deep breathing techniques, creating genuine laughter through playful activities.

The beauty of this approach is its accessibility. Every child can participate, regardless of ability, background, or mood. There’s no equipment needed, no special space required, and sessions can be adapted to fit into even the busiest school timetable.

A Tool for Life

When children learn Laughter Yoga techniques, they gain more than immediate stress relief. They acquire a lifelong tool for managing their wellbeing—something they can use during exams, in challenging situations, or whenever life feels overwhelming.

Just as we teach children to ride a bike, swim, or play sports, we can equip them with Laughter Yoga techniques early on. These skills become part of their emotional toolkit, supporting them through childhood and into adulthood.

The Research

The systematic review examined studies from South Korea, Turkey, Hong Kong, and India and demonstrated that the benefits of Laughter Yoga transcend cultural boundaries. Sessions typically lasted 30–50 minutes and were conducted over 3–8 weeks, resulting in measurable improvements in children’s well-being.

Importantly, the research found that children who practised Laughter Yoga showed significant decreases in test anxiety and educational stress – two of the most pressing concerns in modern education.

Creating a Foundation of Wellbeing

Schools are increasingly recognising that academic success cannot be separated from emotional well-being. A stressed, anxious child cannot learn effectively. A child who feels disconnected from their peers struggles to thrive.

Laughter Yoga addresses these fundamental needs whilst simultaneously supporting physical health, cognitive function, and social development. It’s not an add-on to education – it’s an essential foundation for it. Take a look at the article on The Key To Enhancing Children’s Mental Health.

Why This Matters Now

With mental health challenges among children rising, longer waiting lists for CAMHS and therapists, we cannot afford to overlook evidence-based, accessible interventions like Laughter Yoga. The research is clear. The benefits are proven. The implementation is simple.

Perhaps, in a few years, Laughter Yoga will be as commonplace in schools as PE lessons or assemblies in the UK. In India, where Laughter Yoga was founded by family physician Dr Madan Kataria, it is commonplace. Many schools incorporate sessions of up to 30 minutes, with short 5 minute Laughter Yoga boosts in assemblies and as a playground activity.

Children will grow up with these techniques as naturally as they learn their times tables. They’ll have the tools to manage stress, build resilience, and approach life’s challenges with greater flexibility and joy.

The question isn’t whether schools can afford to introduce Laughter Yoga – it’s whether they can afford not to.

As I was leaving Broadheath Primary School after delivering their school assembly Laughter Yoga introductory sessions, I heard everyone in the classroom saying “Very good, very good, yay,” which confirmed that this school was serious about integrating Laughter Yoga into the school day.
