What Is Laughter Yoga? A Complete Guide to the Practice That Is Changing Lives
If you have ever come across Laughter Yoga and thought, “That sounds a bit strange – is it really for me?” then you are not alone. It is one of the most common reactions Sunny hears, and she completely understands it. She came to Laughter Yoga through her own experience of depression, at a time when laughter felt like the furthest thing from possible. What she discovered changed her life – and has since changed the lives of thousands of people she has worked with across the UK.
So, what exactly is Laughter Yoga? Why does it work even when you do not feel like laughing? And why are major organisations, mental health charities, and community groups around the world embracing it as a serious wellbeing practice?
What Is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga is a unique wellbeing practice that combines intentional laughter exercises with deep yogic breathing techniques, known as Pranayama. It was created in 1995 by Indian medical doctor Dr Madan Kataria, and has since spread to over 120 countries worldwide. In 2025, it celebrated its 30th anniversary – a testament to the fact that this is far from a passing trend.
Despite the name, Laughter Yoga has no yoga poses, no stretches, and no requirement to be flexible, spiritual, or even particularly cheerful. What it does require is a willingness to show up, breathe, and play.
Do You Need to Be Happy – or Funny – to Do Laughter Yoga?
This is perhaps the most important thing to understand about Laughter Yoga, and the thing that surprises people most: you do not need to feel happy, funny, or in the mood to laugh. You do not need jokes, comedy, or a natural sense of humour.
Laughter Yoga is built on a fascinating, well-documented scientific principle: your body cannot distinguish between genuine laughter and intentionally simulated laughter. Both produce the same physiological and psychological responses. When you choose to laugh – even if it feels a little forced at first – your brain and body respond as though that laughter is completely real, triggering the same cascade of feel-good chemicals and physical benefits.
How Does a Laughter Yoga Session Work?
A typical Laughter Yoga session guides participants through a series of playful laughter exercises, combined with deep breathing, gentle movement, and moments of childlike playfulness. Sessions are led by a trained Laughter Yoga teacher and are suitable for all ages, all fitness levels, and all personality types – including those who describe themselves as shy, introverted, or sceptical.
The magic of a Laughter Yoga session is in the transformation that happens within it. What begins as voluntary, intentional laughter – which can feel a little self-conscious at first – quickly becomes genuine, contagious, and deeply joyful as the group energy builds and inhibitions fall away. Most participants find this happens within just a few minutes.
Sessions with Serious Laughter typically include warm-up exercises to ease participants in gently, a sequence of accessible laughter exercises, breathing techniques drawn from yogic tradition, light movement, group connection, and a closing period of deep relaxation through Yoga Nidra. Participants leave feeling energised, lighter, and often surprised by how much they enjoyed themselves.

What Happens in Your Body When You Laugh?
The science behind Laughter Yoga is well-established, and the medical and wellbeing communities are increasingly recognising its benefits. When we laugh – whether genuinely or intentionally – a series of powerful changes occur throughout the body.
Brain chemistry, laughter increases the production of dopamine, which supports motivation and pleasure; oxytocin, which promotes feelings of bonding and trust; serotonin, which regulates mood; and endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals. At the same time, it lowers cortisol, the primary stress hormone that so many of us carry in excess.
Physically, laughter dilates blood vessels and improves circulation, lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, enhances oxygen flow to organs, and provides a gentle cardiovascular workout. Respiratory function also improves, as the deep belly breathing that accompanies hearty laughter exercises the diaphragm and increases lung capacity.
These are not small or superficial benefits. They represent genuine, measurable improvements to physical and mental health that accumulate over time with regular practice.
The Mental Health Benefits of Laughter Yoga
The impact of Laughter Yoga on mental health is where many people – including Sunny herself – find the most profound change. Regular practice has been shown to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety, combat depression, improve overall mood, enhance emotional resilience, boost self-confidence, and promote better sleep patterns.
For those managing conditions such as ADHD, chronic stress, or burnout, Laughter Yoga offers a particularly valuable tool. It interrupts the cycle of anxious thinking – it is almost impossible to ruminate when you are laughing – whilst simultaneously delivering the neurochemical boost the brain needs to regulate mood and restore energy.
Perhaps most importantly, Laughter Yoga is accessible to people who struggle with conventional exercise, meditation, or talking therapies. It requires no prior experience, no special equipment, and no particular physical ability. It simply requires showing up.

The Power of Laughing Together
One of the most significant and often underestimated benefits of Laughter Yoga is its impact on human connection. In a world where loneliness and isolation are increasingly recognised as public health concerns, the group dynamic of a Laughter Yoga session creates something genuinely precious.
Shared laughter breaks down social barriers with remarkable speed. Participants who arrived as strangers leave feeling warmly connected. Communication improves, empathy deepens, and the sense of community that builds within a Laughter Yoga group is one of the most consistent things participants comment on.
For workplaces, this translates into stronger team relationships, improved morale, and a more open, supportive culture. For community groups, it means reduced isolation and a renewed sense of belonging. For individuals, it can be the beginning of a whole new relationship with joy.
Laughter Yoga for Corporate Wellbeing
Major organisations across the UK and around the world are incorporating Laughter Yoga into their wellbeing programmes, and it is not difficult to see why. A single session can boost employee morale, reduce workplace stress, improve team dynamics, increase creativity and productivity, and create a more positive working environment – all in 60 minutes, with no equipment and no prior experience required.
Serious Laughter has delivered Laughter Yoga workshops for the likes of Selfridges, Nandos, British Gas Energy, NHS staff and prison officers.
Every corporate session is designed with your team’s specific needs in mind. Whether you are looking for a conference icebreaker, a team-building activity, a lunchtime wellbeing session, or a full wellbeing workshop, Laughter Yoga can be tailored to suit your organisation, your culture, and your goals.
Sessions are available in person across Manchester, Cheshire, Yorkshire, and the wider UK, as well as online for hybrid and remote teams.

What is Laughter Yoga, and Who Is Laughter Yoga Suitable For?
Laughter Yoga is one of the most inclusive wellbeing practices available. It requires no special equipment and can be adapted for all ages and physical abilities. It works whether participants are seated or standing, in person or online, in a group of five to 500.
It is particularly well suited to people who are sceptical about wellbeing workshops – which, in Sunny’s experience, often become the most enthusiastic converts. It is also deeply valuable for those managing stress, anxiety, burnout, low mood, loneliness, or chronic illness, as well as for those who simply want more joy, connection, and laughter in their everyday lives. Many sceptics’ first question is “What is Laughter Yoga?” – straightaway, we explain at the start of each Laughter Yoga session.
Try This Simple Laughter Yoga Exercise Right Now
You do not need to wait for a session to experience a taste of Laughter Yoga. Try this:
Clap your hands with flat palms whilst saying “ho ho, ha ha ha” rhythmically. After five repetitions, pause the clapping and push both hands forward as you say “ho ho,” then push them down as you say “ha ha ha.” Gradually increase your speed. Notice what happens in your body – and whether a smile creeps in almost before you have had time to think about it.
That is Laughter Yoga in action, releasing stress and boosting positivity.
A Personal Note From Sunny
I came to Laughter Yoga at one of the lowest points of my life. Depression had taken so much from me, and laughter felt like something that belonged to a different version of myself entirely. I rarely laughed for 20 years. When I discovered that I could choose to laugh – that I did not have to wait to feel happy first – it changed everything.
Since 2017, I have delivered Laughter Yoga sessions and talks on Laughter For the Health Of It to over 13,000 people across the UK: in corporate boardrooms, community halls, at conferences and birthday parties, online and in person. What I see in every single session is the same thing: people arriving carrying the weight of their lives and leaving a little lighter.
